Call to Action! Hypertension and Dyslipidemia in Mexico: Underestimated Deadly Duo

Background: High blood pressure and dyslipidemia are risk factors that begin silently and share many pathophysiological mechanisms of tissue damage.Aim: Draw attention to this binomial (Hypertension and dyslipidemia) that is highly prevalent in Mexico and is mainly responsible for the leading atherothrombotic process as a cause of death in Mexico and the world.Methods: Reflective analysis of the evidence accumulated in the last 20 years. We launch key messages and support why every hypertensive patient should be treated with a statin.Results: We call for awareness to measure lipid levels and blood pressure twice a year from the age of 20 and to detect these devastating nosological entities as soon as possible. We remove the myth that PCSK9 inhibitors as well as the small interfering RNA of its synthesis are only for familial dyslipidemia. Measurement of serum Lp(a) should be routine, especially if you have a history of your own and family cardiovascular events.Conclusion: We should be aware of the little impact that health strategies have had to stop the main cause of death in Mexico. Every hypertensive patient should receive a statin, even if their serum LDLc levels are apparently normal. The great challenge of optimal control of the population with hypertension and/or dyslipidemia continues. The small interfering RNA synthesis PCSK9 should also be considered when conventional therapies are not sufficient and this situation is not infrequent.

The National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) is a public institution created by Law 9782/1999, which integrates the field of Collective Health and acts in the prevention, control, and inspection of sanitary conditions in various sectors, such as food, health, pharmacies, hospitals, and commercial establishments. Its main objective is to guarantee the protection of public health, ensuring that products, services, and environments comply with established standards, to promote health and preventing diseases. To exercise its inspection and control function, Sanitary Surveillance has the power of sanitary police, which gives it the authority to apply necessary measures and curb practices that pose risks to the health of the population.The performance of the Sanitary Surveillance is fundamental to prevent health risks in any part of society and to guarantee national programs for patient safety. It is also essential to prevent diseases, control risks, and monitor compliance with health standards and specific regulations. The police power of Sanitary Surveillance consists of establishing norms and technical regulations, carrying out inspections and inspections, issuing temporary or permanent interdiction orders in establishments that do not comply with the norms, as well as forwarding complaints to the Public Ministry in cases of crimes against public health. Arrests carried out by Sanitary Surveillance agents are extreme measures and applied in serious situations of risk to public health or when there is repeated disrespect for sanitary regulations. The prohibited establishments have the right of defense and may seek to regularize the situation to obtain the release of activities.The performance of the Sanitary Surveillance has significant impacts on the prevention of disease outbreaks and epidemics. Identifying and correcting inappropriate practices helps to prevent the spread of pathogenic agents and reduce the risk of contagion in collective environments. The institution’s preventive and supervisory activities contribute to reducing risks to the population’s health, preventing disease outbreaks, food poisoning, and the proliferation of pests, among other problems. Finally, the importance of exercising police power with transparency, impartiality, and respect for individual rights is emphasized, always aiming at the collective interest and the promotion of the common good. In summary, Health Surveillance plays an essential role in protecting public health, seeking to ensure that the population has access to safe products and services, contributing to the improvement of quality of life and disease prevention.

Satellite-Based Analysis of Air Pollution Trends in Khartoum before and After the Conflict

This study investigates the impact of socio-political disruptions on air quality in Khartoum, Sudan, focusing on key pollutants: Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Nitrogen Dioxide (NO₂), and Sulfur Dioxide (SO₂). Using Sentinel-5P satellite data (2020–2024) processed in Google Earth Engine (GEE), spatial and temporal variations in pollutant levels were analyzed before and after a significant war event in April 2023. The methodology included data acquisition, preprocessing (e.g., cloud masking, spatial filtering), monthly averages computation, visualization, and statistical analysis using Google Earth Engine (GEE), ArcGIS Pro, and Microsoft Excel. Results showed a marked post-war increase in AOD levels, attributed to infrastructure destruction, fires, and diminished industrial oversight, alongside spatially consistent pollution patterns in some regions. CO concentrations exhibited an overall decline due to reduced industrial activities and transportation, though localized anomalies were linked to concentrated emissions. Similarly, NO₂ levels dropped significantly, reflecting reduced vehicular and industrial activities, while sporadic increases suggested localized emissions like generator use. SO₂ demonstrated mixed trends, with reduced mean levels but increased variability, indicating sporadic high-emission events linked to emergency fuel use or conflict-related disruptions. This study uniquely combines high-resolution satellite data with advanced spatial and temporal analysis techniques to reveal the nuanced and multi-pollutant impact of socio-political conflicts on air quality in Khartoum, providing novel insights into the environmental repercussions of armed conflicts. These findings highlight the profound impact of socio-political events on atmospheric pollution dynamics, underscoring the need for robust urban planning, targeted environmental monitoring, and policies to mitigate air quality deterioration and address public health concerns in conflict-prone regions. The study emphasizes the importance of satellite-based monitoring to provide critical insights into the environmental repercussions of socio-political upheavals.

In vitro, Anti-oxidant, and Anti-inflammatory Activity of Kalanchoe pinnata

Kalanchoe pinnata is a widely recognized medicinal plant known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This study explores its in vitro antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, highlighting its potential for pharmaceutical and biomedical applications. The research innovatively assesses its bioactive components using DPPH radical scavenging, nitric oxide inhibition assays, and phenolic content analysis. Results demonstrated significant antioxidant activity with IC50 values comparable to ascorbic acid, along with notable anti-inflammatory effects via nitric oxide inhibition. These findings emphasize Kalanchoe pinnata’s potential as a source for developing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory therapeutics. Further investigation into bioactive compound isolation and mechanistic pathways is recommended to clarify its pharmacological efficacy.

Efficient Sequential Chromatographic Purification of a Recombinant Nanobody-Fc Fusion Designed for Treatment of Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is caused by a virus that induces acute infections. Despite its expansion beyond China, where it first appeared in 2009, no specific drug exists to treat the disease. The discovery that antibodies targeting the SFTS virus surface glycoprotein (Glycoprotein N, GN) significantly enhance patient survival has driven the development of antibodies, particularly nanobodies. Nanobodies targeting the GN protein are a promising therapeutic approach. This paper presents a systematic study of the purification process for a recombinant nanobody-Fc fusion designed to treat the SFTS virus HB29. The study evaluated a sequential purification approach using affinity (AFF), ion exchange (IEC), and hydrophobic interaction chromatography (HIC) techniques to gradually remove impurities. The results demonstrate that this approach achieves an overall yield of more than 50% and a total purity of 95%. Efficient nanobody purification methods, as outlined here, can pave the way for novel treatments to manage this disease.

Mitochondria are essential intracellular organelles that significantly influence various cellular processes, including metabolism, stress response, and cell fate. Their precise regulation is crucial for maintaining both organelle and cellular homeostasis. Wound healing is a complex, multifactorial process that relies on the coordinated actions of multiple cell types and numerous cellular mechanisms. Dysregulation in this process can lead to chronic wounds, which pose substantial challenges for healthcare systems and present limited treatment options due to their intricate pathogenesis. Recent research has increasingly focused on the role of mitochondria in wound healing, revealing their involvement in critical processes such as metabolism, apoptosis, and redox signaling. Mitochondrial dynamics play a vital role in wound healing by adapting to cellular demands and environmental cues. Moreover, mitophagy, the selective degradation of damaged mitochondria, is crucial for maintaining mitochondrial integrity and function during the healing process. Mitochondria are not only pivotal in energy production but also in calcium homeostasis and the generation of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species, which are essential for signaling during wound repair. As wound healing progresses through distinct yet overlapping stages mitochondria facilitate the energy demands of repair and contribute to cytoskeletal remodeling necessary for wound closure. Understanding the multifaceted roles of mitochondria in wound healing could lead to novel therapeutic approaches for chronic wounds. Future research should prioritize investigating mitochondrial dynamics and functions in human tissues to develop targeted strategies for enhancing wound healing outcomes.

Exploring the Potential of Medicinal Plants in Bone Marrow Regeneration and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Therapy

Blood cell production through hematopoiesis within the bone marrow serves both to maintain blood equilibrium and to respond to tissue injury and infectious demands. Hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) therapy developments have revolutionized medical treatment approaches for anemia leukemia and bone marrow failure caused by chemotherapy or radiation exposure. The therapeutic compounds present in medicinal plants have traditionally supported blood health and researchers now understand these plants could help regenerate bone marrow tissue. The analysis investigates how phytochemicals affect HSC proliferation and differentiation while supporting HSC survival. The medicinal plants Panax ginseng, Astragalus membranaceus, and Curcuma longa receive special attention for their documented ability to enhance hematopoiesis in preclinical and clinical settings. This review examines the challenges that include standardization issues, toxicity concerns, and regulatory barriers alongside future perspectives about combining plant-based therapies with traditional treatments to improve bone marrow recovery and health results.

GELS as Pharmaceutical Form in Hospital Galenic Practice: Chemico-physical and Pharmaceutical Aspects

This work aims to describe the chemical-physical properties of various GELS used as galenic forms in hospital pharmacy practice. After an overview of the excipients and method used three preparations are reported. LAT GEL is used as an anesthetic in an emergency (pediatry ) in treating little Traumatic lacerations of the skin and scalp, calcium gel is used as an antidote for fluoride acid burns, and Lidocaine viscose 2% oral gel is used in some pathological conditions like severe esophagitis in onco - hematological patients after radiotherapy or chemotherapy. The galenic role in the situation of some drug shortages was also analyzed.

Evolution of Antifungal Activity of Artemisia herba-alba Extracts on Growth of Aspergillus sp. and Rhizopus sp.

Plant extracts and their constituents have a long history as antifungal agents, but their use in biotechnology as preservatives, due to the increasing resistance of fungi to fungicides, has been rarely reported in Libya. The aim of this study is to evaluate the antifungal activity of ethanol extract and water extract of the wild native plant Artemisia herba-alba against two genera of mold fungi Aspergillus sp. and Rhizopus sp. This mold fungal causes significant damage to crops in the field or during storage. In this study, a hot ethanol extract was prepared using a device Soxhlet, and water extract hot as well as a cold ethanol extract and cold-water extract aqueous extract three concentrations (25% - 50% - 75%) of plant extracts were used on the tested fungi. All extracts showed an effect on the tested fungi. The concentrations of (75% - 50%) of the extracts had an effect on the tested fungi, while most concentrations of 25% of the extracts did not record any effect on the tested fungi. The hot ethanol extract of the Artemisia herba-alba plant was more effective than the other extracts. Aspergillus sp. was recorded with the highest inhibitory zone (0.73 mm).

Pneumothorax as Complication of CT Guided Lung Biopsy: Frequency, Severity and Assessment of Risk Factors

Background: CT-guided lung biopsy is routinely performed minimally invasive procedure. Imaging findings in the lung can have a broad differential diagnosis; therefore, it is indicated for definitive determination of pulmonary nodules or masses. Post-biopsy complications are common with most of them manageable in daycare. As pneumothorax is the most common complication, frequency and severity of pneumothorax with assessment of risk factors and follow-up for resolution is necessary.Methods: A prospective evaluation of 123 biopsies with automated coaxial biopsy of 18 gauge was done. Post-biopsy pneumothorax was evaluated for its incidence and resolution. The studied risk factors were; patient age, sex, lesion location, lesion size, shortest pleural lesion depth, traversed lung parenchymal distance, presence of emphysema, fissure penetration, needle thoracic wall angle, and lesion characteristics.Results: Reported immediate post-procedural pneumothorax was 22% with 19% of mild, 4% of moderate and 2.4% of severe cases. 51.9% of cases showed resolution within 24 hours. The intervention was required in only 4.8% of biopsy cases. A significant p - value of pneumothorax with the nodule depth increased traversed lung parenchymal distance, acute needle angle, fissure puncture, and presence of emphysema was seen. Emphysema was an independent variable in pneumothorax in multivariate analysis.Conclusion: Pneumothorax is an unamenable consequence of CT-guided lung biopsy and a cautious approach should be kept in view of the variables that are associated with it to reduce its incidence and severity in patients.

Prevalence and Risk Factors to Preterm Labor through a Study in Jiblah University Hospital, Ibb, Governorate, Yemen

Background: Preterm Birth (PTB) is the largest direct cause of neonatal mortality and the second leading cause of under-five mortality following pneumonia. Although there are studies conducted before, the magnitude of PTB remains a major issue in most developing countries including Yemen. Therefore, this study aims to assess the prevalence and associated factors of premature birth among newborns delivered in Jiblah University Hospital in Ibb governorate, Yemen.Objectives: No studies have previously been conducted about preterm labour in Jiblah University Hospital in Ibb governorate, Yemen.Methods: This retrospective observational study was conducted in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Jiblah University Hospital in Ibb Governorate, from 1 December 2023 to 29 February 2024.Results: A total of 1350 pregnancies, 252 (18.67%) were preterm deliveries and 1089 (80.66%) were full-term deliveries at Jiblah University Hospital, Ibb. Our study shows the distribution of participants based on socio-demographic factors. The data that out of the total 252 female participants, with ages mean ± std = 27.43 ± 6.34 roughly 18.67% experienced preterm deliveries. Our study demonstrates that several factors are significantly linked to preterm birth, including the number of siblings, blood pressure, gravida, and abortion number, where the Chi-square p - value was < 0.05. On the other hand, the results from the logistic regression analysis indicated the predictive potential of certain socio-demographic factors in relation to preterm birth. Conclusion: In this study, the number of siblings, blood pressure, gravida, and abortion number are the risk factors for premature delivery. Recognizing the most common risk factors for PTB will help to increase awareness about high-risk pregnancy, improve the preventive measures of preterm risk factors, and modify preterm care protocol in nurseries.

Comprehensive Acceptance Testing and Performance Evaluation of the Symbia Intevo Bold SPECT/CT System for Clinical Use

Aim: This prospective study reports the acceptance testing of the Symbia Intevo Bold SPECT/CT scanner (Siemens Healthineers), recently installed at SQCCCRC, University Medical City, Muscat, Oman, before its clinical implementation.Materials and methods: The acceptance tests were performed using a Low Energy High Resolution (LEHR) collimator and Technetium-99m (Tc-99m) as the radioactive source, following the manufacturer’s protocols. The tests included physical inspection, peaking and tuning, intrinsic and extrinsic uniformity calibration, intrinsic energy resolution, and planar spatial resolution without scatter. Key performance parameters such as full-width at half-maximum (FWHM), system sensitivity, and count rate performance were evaluated.Results: All critical acceptance tests, including intrinsic energy resolution, energy calibration (symmetric curve), and extrinsic uniformity with the LEHR collimator, were completed and met the required specifications. System sensitivity and count rate performance were within the expected ranges, confirming the system’s readiness for clinical use.Conclusion: The Symbia Intevo Bold SPECT/CT system passed all performance tests successfully. The acceptance testing validated the system’s optimal performance following international standards, ensuring its suitability for clinical operations.

Background: Biotechnology is a multidisciplinary field based on the expertise of molecular biology, chemistry, biochemistry, chemical and biological engineering, and digital computing. Biotechnology plays an important role in modern forensic science, driving advances in analytical tools and techniques.This review study provides a brief overview of applications, highlighting advances in forensic biotechnology and key technologies involved in the domains of genomics and DNA analysis, microbial forensics, forensic medicine, and forensic serology. Maximizing the Potential of Ketogenic Dieting as a Potent, Safe, Easy-to-Apply and Cost-Effective Anti-Cancer Therapy

The global menace of cancer requires supplementary treatments beyond standard medical approaches for effective medical intervention. The Ketogenic Diet (KD) composed of high fats combined with moderate proteins and low carbohydrates has become popular as a metabolic therapy for cancer. The anti-cancer mechanism of KD works through metabolic stress induction in cancer cells, reduced insulin and IGF-1 signaling pathways, improved mitochondrial function, inflammation, and immune regulation. Standard cancer treatments receive enhanced outcomes through KD synergistic action which simultaneously decreases treatment-related side effects. To achieve optimized treatment outcomes in cancer, ketogenic diet practitioners need to use personalized nutritional planning in combination with metabolic tracking and exogenous ketone supplements. It is essential to find solutions for diet adherence issues and nutrient deficiencies because they determine KD’s effectiveness as a cancer treatment. The fight against cancer needs sustained and multipronged clinical research and validation to establish the proper implementation of this method.

The condition primarily affects patients between 20 and 50 years old, with a peak frequency observed between 35 and 50 years.After menopause, due to the natural involution of the gland, Bartholin's cysts and abscesses become less frequent, although they can still occur. Moreover, in women over 50, the appearance of a new mass in the gland region should prompt caution, as it may, in rare cases, indicate a carcinoma of the Bartholin's gland or an adjacent vulvar cancer. Therefore, for patients over 40 presenting with a newly emerged cyst or abscess, clinical guidelines recommend performing a biopsy or excision to rule out malignancy. We present the case of a 50-year-old woman with no significant medical history, who was urgently referred to the gynecological emergency department due to confusion, unexplained fever of 40 °C, and resistant leucorrhoea following a week of corticosteroid antibiotic therapy. Clinical examination revealed a large, tender right vulvar mass, indicative of an acute Bartholin's abscess. The patient exhibited signs of septic shock and was admitted to the ICU. Following a diagnosis of sepsis, broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy was initiated, alongside fluid resuscitation and norepinephrine support. Surgical drainage of the abscess confirmed the presence of E. coli. The patient's condition improved rapidly, and she was discharged on postoperative day 8 with no complications. This case underscores that while Bartholin's abscess is typically benign, severe complications, including septic shock, can occur—especially in patients over 50. The appearance of a new Bartholin's region mass in older women should prompt consideration of malignancy, necessitating biopsy or excision. Recent studies compare various therapeutic approaches including simple incision and drainage, Word catheter placement, marsupialization, silver nitrate application, and complete gland excision. Each method has its advantages and drawbacks, with marsupialization offering lower recurrence rates and higher patient satisfaction in many instances.

Pyridostigmine-Induced Status Epilepticus Rat Model Was Resistant to Increasing Doses of Ramipril: The Latter Triggered Epileptogenesis, Arrhythmia, and Cardiac Ischemia in a Dose-Dependent Manner

Background: Studies explored the therapeutic role of agents inhibiting RAS in epilepsy. Fewer studies addressed the electrophysiological changes associated with angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) in terms of sustained seizures (status epilepticus). Sodium valproate (SVPA), a broad-spectrum anticonvulsant, has been associated with adverse cardiac events upon long-term use, in contrast to the beneficial role of ACEIs in cardiovascular disorders.  This work explored the potential effects of ramipril, an ACEI, compared to SVPA, on the behavior, and electrophysiology of the brain and heart in a rat model of status epilepticus. The dose dependent pattern of the presumed ramipril activities was investigated. Methods: Adult male rats were assigned into seven groups, controls, IP pyridostigmine (36 mg/kg)-induced status epilepticus (PISE), oral SVPA (5 mg/kg), and three groups receiving oral ramipril at respective doses of 5 (R5), 10 (R10), and 20 mg/kg (R20). Rat behavior was assessed using Racine’s motor convulsion scoring for 10 minutes.  Blood pressure was recorded, and electroencephalography (EEG) and electrocardiography (ECG) were performed on the sedated rats 24 hours after recovery. Results: Despite the partial behavioral improvement of motor convulsions with R5 and R10 exhibited epileptogenic activity, as indicated by the increased relative power of fast and slow gamma waves and total EEG power. R10 triggered arrhythmia and cardiac ischemia as indicated by absence of P wave, along with ST elevation and tall T wave, slowed heart rate and prolonged QRS, QTc, and RR intervals. Conclusion: PISE was resistant to sodium valproate and ramipril. Ramipril at low and moderate doses induced epileptogenic activity and, especially at moderate dose, precipitated cardiac ischemia and arrhythmia. SummaryThe debatable role of ramipril in epilepsy was studied in a rat model of pyridostigmine-induced status epilepticus, compared to sodium valproate. Increasing ramipril doses did not resolve status epilepticus in rats. Instead, low and moderate doses exhibited epileptogenic activity, opposite to high dose ramipril and sodium valproate. Blood pressure was dose-dependently reduced with ramipril. Electrocardiography showed evidence of cardiac arrythmia and ischemia, especially with the moderate ramipril dose. The behavioral and EEG indices correlated with systolic blood pressure and ECG changes.

The integration of deep learning and genetic analysis has transformed the assessment of elite sports performance, particularly in competitive swimming. This study examines the fusion of deep learning techniques with DNA markers, physiological biometrics, and performance analytics to enhance the prediction and optimization of swimmer performance. A structured dataset comprising genetic sequences, physiological parameters, and biomechanical attributes was utilized to train a neural network model capable of categorizing swimmers based on genetic predisposition and athletic potential. The model achieved high classification accuracy, demonstrating a strong link between genetic markers, physiological traits, and competitive swimming outcomes. The findings emphasize the potential of AI-driven analytics in talent identification, customized training adaptations, and injury prevention. Furthermore, the study highlights the effectiveness of deep learning in analyzing complex genomic and physiological data to generate meaningful insights for performance enhancement. While the results validate the feasibility of using genetic and AI-based models for performance prediction, further studies are needed to broaden dataset diversity, integrate epigenetic influences, and test the model across varied athlete populations. This research contributes to the expanding field of AI-driven sports science and provides a solid foundation for incorporating genomics with deep learning to enhance elite athletic performance.

Reduced Pain Scores during Indocyanine Green Lymphography by using a Different Preparation Formula

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a different indocyanine green lymphography formula can reduce the severe pain encountered during this investigation.Methods: Indocyanine green ICG lymphography frequently induces severe and intolerable pain in patients. It is very important to develop a relatively painless lymphography method. This helps reduce patients’ apprehension during examination. Our center conducted randomized control groups of 60 patients with limb lymphedema. Cases were divided into experimental and control groups. Patients in the experimental group were injected with indocyanine green solution containing 5% glucose, while patients in the control group were injected with indocyanine green solution with sterile water.VAS scores were recorded pre-injection, during, and at 10, 20, and 30 minutes post-injection. We recorded possible side effects, e.g. skin redness, itching, subcutaneous bleeding, bruising, severe allergic reactions, and other complications within 24 and 48 hours after imaging, and analyzed the pain score data. Results: The average pain score of the experimental group was 0-3 points, while the control group was 6-8 points. Disease staging was accurately assessed based on imaging results . No other serious complications occurred.Conclusion: Pain can be significantly reduced by the new modality. This method does not affect lymphography results and imaging quality, and there are no obvious serious complications.

Green Synthesis of Citrus sinensis Peel (Orange Peel) Extract Silver Nanoparticle and its Various Pharmacological Activities

Citrus sinensis is a rich source of bioactive compounds  and has attracted attention due to its medicinal benefits. Historically regarded as agricultural waste, orange peel is rich in flavonoids, polyphenols, tannins, and essential oils with antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant qualities. The phytochemicals in Citrus sinensis peel were used as natural reducing and stabilizing agents in the green synthesis method used in this work to create silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). This method is an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional nanoparticle production, eliminating the need for hazardous chemicals. Based on the study’s results, green-synthesized silver nanoparticles derived from Citrus sinensis peel extract offer a sustainable and biocompatible substitute for biomedical applications. The pharmaceutical and healthcare industries may find therapeutic uses for them due to their exceptional antibacterial, antioxidant, and anticancer properties.
